North Korean-linked hackers have reportedly pulled off what could be the largest theft in history, moving roughly $6.3 billion in crypto from Binance wallets, with most of the money drained in just about 20 minutes. Blockchain intelligence firms say the attack bears strong similarities to previous North Korean operations, including the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in 2025.
Think about that number for a second: $6.3 billion. Money that existed digitally was moved across multiple blockchains in minutes. Binance says customer funds are safe, and billions of dollars have already been frozen by Binance and other crypto companies, but the incident has still sent shockwaves through the market.
For me, the biggest lesson isn't just about Binance. It's about cybersecurity. Africa is rapidly becoming more digital, from banking and fintech to crypto and online businesses. If one of the world's biggest crypto exchanges can suffer an attack of this magnitude, nobody should assume African financial systems are too small to become targets. We need serious investment in cybersecurity, better infrastructure, stronger security teams and constant monitoring.
The real question is: if billions can disappear from one of the world's biggest crypto platforms in minutes, are African companies and governments investing enough in cybersecurity to protect what we're building?
