What is Diphtheria?

It is a serious infection caused by the bacterium called corynebacterium diphtheria which produces a powerful toxin that spreads through coughing, sneezing,or close contact.

What are the symptoms?

- Sore throat and fever

- Difficulty swallowing or breathing

- Swollen neck

- A thick grey/ white covering on the throat or tonsils.

In severe cases,it can damage the heart,nerves and kidneys.

Diphtheria can be deadly if not treated quickly. Nigeria has already recorded thousands of cases and many deaths. Children are mostly at risk, but adults can get it too.

Vaccination is the best protection ( DPT/ DTaP Vaccine). Ensure you and your household get vaccinated.

Maintain hygiene: wash your hands often, cover your mouth when coughing/ sneezing and avoid sharing utensils with strangers.

If you notice any of the symptoms listed above, seek emergency medical care. Most deadly diseases can be cured when caught early.
