Someone shared this experience with us, and we thought it was worth bringing to the Chamber.
I am the first child in my family, and somehow, that has become a full-time responsibility I never applied for.
Whenever anyone needs money, I’m the first person they call. School fees, hospital bills, rent, business problems, emergencies, somehow, it always comes back to me.
The painful part is that nobody asks whether I’m okay financially. They just assume I can handle it because I’m working.
Recently, I had to turn down a request for money because I was struggling with my own bills. The way my family reacted made me feel like I was selfish and ungrateful.
I love my family, and I want to help them. But I’m beginning to feel guilty for choosing myself, and honestly, I’m exhausted.
Sometimes, I wish someone would ask me how I’m surviving instead of always asking what I can give.
LET’S TALK ABOUT IT
Family responsibility is real, but so is financial exhaustion. Loving your family should not mean sacrificing your peace and pretending you have everything figured out.
Here in the Chamber, we understand that some conversations are difficult to have openly.
Drop your thoughts in the comments. Share your perspective, some advice for someone who feels trapped between family expectations and personal survival.
No judgment. Just honest conversations.
Your secret. Your story. OurPalaver.
