In a bid to tackle the persistent challenges facing girl-child education in northern Nigeria, UNICEF has launched a targeted initiative in Sokoto State aimed at increasing school enrollment and retention among girls.

The program focuses on community engagement, skill-based learning and creating safe learning environment, all designed to make education more accessible and relevant for girls.

According to UNICEF, the approach not only empowers girls with practical skills but also builds trust within communities, many of which have deep-rooted cultural barriers to formal education for females.

“By involving parents, local leaders and offering skills training alongside academics, we’re seeing a shift in attitudes and an increase in the number of girls staying in school,” a UNICEF representative stated.

The initiative is already yielding positive results, with reports of improved enrollment figures and stronger community support across targeted areas in the state.

Education stakeholders hope this model can be replicated across other regions to address the wider girl-child education gap in Nigeria.
