The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), conducted from May 12 to May 23. A total of 179,201 candidates registered for the exam, which ran smoothly across the country. NECO also announced resit examinations for students who failed Mathematics and English, scheduled for July 23 and 24, 2025  .

NECO further opened registration for the 2025 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) External cohort beginning July 7, 2025. Candidates must register by September 18, 2025, to avoid a N10,000 late fee. Eligibility requires having taken the SSCE Internal exam within the last five years. Registration costs N40,000 and includes biometric verification via NIN. The exams will run from September 29 to December 19, 2025, with photo cards as mandatory entry permits. NECO warned that any candidate with mismatched biometric data will be sanctioned, including cancellation of results.

NECO also conducted the 2025 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) for admission into Federal Government Unity Colleges on June 14. Approximately 64,000 primary school pupils sat the exam nationwide, with Lagos recording the highest number of candidates and Togo having the fewest. Exam centers included students from Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Togo  .

On policy matters, the Federal Government has mandated that NECO and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) begin administering objective papers via Computer‑Based Testing (CBT) starting November 2025, with full transition — including essay components — by May/June 2026. The Education Minister believes this move is crucial for reducing examination malpractice and aligning Nigeria’s assessment system with international standards. However, critics have raised concerns that the country’s infrastructure, digital literacy levels, and exam formats may not be fully prepared for such a shift  .
