The University of Calabar (UNICAL) is facing a storm of criticism after hundreds of Dentistry students were reportedly sent home due to an admission mix-up. According to reports, the institution admitted more students than its approved quota, leading to confusion and frustration among affected undergraduates.
The Dentistry program, which is highly competitive and resource intensive, was said to have exceeded the admission limit set by regulatory bodies. As a result, students who had already resumed academic activities were asked to leave, sparking outrage among parents and candidates who had worked hard to secure their placements.
Stakeholders have described the development as unfair, citing the financial, emotional and academic toll on the young students. Many are now calling for urgent intervention from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and relevant authorities to ensure the students are not unjustly denied their educational future.
UNICAL management is yet to release an official statement addressing the matter, but pressure is mounting on the institution to provide clarity and a fair resolution.
