Nigeria’s first Inspector General of Police was Louis Edet.

Name: Louis Orok Edet

Position: First Indigenous Inspector General of Police (IGP)

Tenure: 1964 – 1966

Louis Edet made history by becoming the first Nigerian to head the Nigeria Police Force after independence. Before him, the role was held by British colonial officers. His appointment marked a major step in Nigeria’s move toward self-governance and indigenous leadership.

He is remembered for his efforts to reform and professionalize the police force and to promote discipline and integrity within the system.

In honor of his legacy, the Nigeria Police Headquarters in Abuja is named the Louis Edet House.
