Kogi University Lecturer Dies in Hotel Room during Encounter with 200-Level Student

A senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, collapsed and died in a hotel room during an alleged sexual encounter with a 22‑year‑old 200‑level student, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred on July 15, 2025, at a hotel in Anyigba, Kogi State  .

Hotel staff say the student, identified as Miss Gloria, rushed to the reception when Dr. Ibikunle became unresponsive. He was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Kogi State Police Command, through spokesperson SP William Aya, confirmed the lecturer’s death and said the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Lokoja is investigating the case. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the precise cause of death. The student remains in police custody.

In response, the university authorities expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident. The registrar, Barr. Yahaya Alilu, described the situation as “tragic and disturbing” and emphasized ongoing cooperation with law enforcement. The institution urged the media and public to avoid speculation and allow investigations to proceed without prejudice  .

As investigations continue, questions linger over the circumstances surrounding Dr. Ibikunle’s sudden collapse amid reports including unconfirmed ones that he had consumed multiple energy drinks prior to the encounter. Authorities have warned against naming or implicating any other students due to a lack of verified evidence.
