Democracy Day in Nigeria is celebrated annually on June 12 to commemorate the country’s return to civilian rule and honor the democratic spirit of its people.

The date marks the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, which was won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola. However, the military regime annulled the election, sparking national protests and a pro-democracy movement.

For many years, Democracy Day was observed on May 29, the day Nigeria transitioned from military to civilian government in 1999. But in 2018, the Federal Government officially changed it to June 12 in recognition of M.K.O. Abiola’s historic victory and the sacrifices made by countless Nigerians for the restoration of democracy.

Democracy Day now serves as a powerful reminder of the country’s democratic journey, the resilience of its people and the ongoing pursuit of justice, freedom and good governance.
