The long-standing “sign-out culture,” where graduating students write farewell messages on their uniforms and host celebratory parties, has come under growing criticism in Nigeria. The practice, often seen at the end of final examinations, is now facing bans in several institutions, particularly across Northern states.

Critics argue that the tradition has become excessive, sometimes encouraging indecent dressing, public disturbance and unruly gatherings. In response, school authorities and state governments have issued directives prohibiting the act, warning that offenders could face disciplinary measures.

Supporters of the crackdown say it will help restore discipline and uphold the values of modesty and respect in educational environments. However, some students see the ban as an attempt to suppress youthful expression and joy at completing their studies.

The debate continues, but for many schools in the North, the message is clear, the era of signing out on uniforms may be coming to an end.
