The first political party in Nigeria was the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP), formed in 1923 by Herbert Macaulay, widely regarded as the father of Nigerian nationalism.

Herbert Macaulay, a trained engineer and passionate nationalist, founded the NNDP to fight for the political rights of Nigerians under British colonial rule. The party aimed to increase African participation in government and promote education, civil rights and representation for Lagos citizens in the legislative council.

The NNDP dominated local politics in Lagos for many years and laid the foundation for future political movements across the country.

Herbert Macaulay’s efforts through the NNDP marked the beginning of organized political activity in Nigeria, sparking a wave of political awareness that would eventually lead to independence in 1960.
