A professor from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has emphasized that strengthening teacher education is crucial to breaking down systemic gender barriers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Speaking at a recent education and development forum in Abuja, the professor highlighted how outdated teaching practices and gender-biased classroom dynamics continue to discourage girls from pursuing STEM careers. According to her, equipping teachers with modern, inclusive strategies is vital for reshaping perceptions and promoting equal participation.

She stressed that “gender equity in STEM begins in the classroom,” and called on policymakers and educational institutions to prioritize teacher training and curriculum reforms that actively support girls in science and technology-related subjects.

The call comes as Nigeria, like many countries, grapples with low female representation in technical fields, despite growing efforts to bridge the gender gap.
