Daily Brief : The Birth Of Naira.

On January 1, 1973, Nigeria officially introduced the Naira as its national currency, marking a historic shift from the British pound system to a monetary identity of its own. This transition was a major step in the country’s post-independence journey toward economic autonomy and national pride.

The Naira replaced the Nigerian pound at a rate of two Naira to one pound and the changeover was overseen by the Central Bank of Nigeria under the leadership of the then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. The move was not just a currency change it was a statement of sovereignty and self-determination, coming just over a decade after Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule.

Designed with local symbols and leaders, the Naira quickly became more than just a medium of exchange. It represented the strength and cultural identity of the Nigerian people. Today, despite facing various economic challenges over the decades, the Naira remains a powerful emblem of Nigeria’s enduring pursuit of financial and national independence.
