The first capital city of Nigeria was Calabar. It served as the capital of the British Protectorate of Southern Nigeria before the amalgamation in 1914. After the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates by Lord Lugard, the capital was moved to Lagos, and later in 1991, to Abuja.
