Nnamdi Azikiwe, fondly known as “Zik of Africa”, was born in Northern Nigeria but hailed from Onitsha in present-day Anambra State. He was one of the most educated Africans of his time, earning multiple degrees in the United States, including at Lincoln University and the University of Pennsylvania. His academic exposure to black empowerment ideologies in the U.S., particularly Pan-Africanism, would shape his political vision.

Rise to National Prominence

Returning to Africa in the 1930s, Azikiwe became a pioneering journalist and publisher, using the press as a tool for anti-colonial activism. His newspaper, West African Pilot, played a central role in mobilizing public opinion against British colonial rule. He co-founded the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) in 1944, a key political party that championed Nigerian independence.

Architect of Independence

Azikiwe was a central figure in Nigeria’s road to independence. He held various high-profile political positions including:

• Premier of Eastern Nigeria (1954–1959)

• Governor-General of Nigeria (1960–1963)

• First President of Nigeria (1963–1966) — following the country’s transition to a republic.

Azikiwe presidency ended with the military coup of January 1966, which ushered in a period of instability.
