FG Considers 12-Year Mandatory Basic Education, Decision Expected October 2025
The Federal Government is currently reviewing a proposal to replace the current JSS/SSS structure with a 12-year mandatory basic education system aimed at ensuring uninterrupted learning from primary through senior secondary levels.
The proposal, which is part of ongoing education reforms, is expected to be deliberated and finalized at the National Council on Education (NCE) meeting scheduled for October 2025.
If approved, the policy will extend compulsory education from 9 to 12 years, with the goal of improving literacy, reducing dropout rates and strengthening workforce readiness among Nigerian youths.
