The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is once again on the brink of shutting down Nigeria’s universities, this time, warning of what it calls the “mother of all strikes.”

On August 26, 2025, the University of Calabar chapter of ASUU declared readiness to embark on an indefinite strike if the Federal Government continues to ignore long-standing agreements.

At the heart of their demands are:

• Full implementation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement

• Sustainable funding for public universities

• Payment of withheld wages and promotion arrears

Lecturers insist that government neglect has crippled the education system, while students remain the biggest victims of repeated disruptions.

With tension building across campuses nationwide, Nigerians are anxiously watching to see if the Federal Government will act swiftly or risk another shutdown that could paralyze the academic calendar.
