The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has introduced a new dress and morality code that bans students from hugging, kissing, wearing heavy makeup and dressing in what it terms “indecent” clothing on campus.

The policy, which was announced in a circular circulated among students, has ignited intense debates both on campus and online. While the university insists the measures are aimed at promoting discipline, moral values and a conducive learning environment, many students and alumni have criticized the rules as overly restrictive and an infringement on personal freedoms.

Some students argue that the ban is out of touch with modern realities, questioning how harmless gestures like hugging and kissing could disrupt academic life. Others have expressed concern that the vague definition of “indecent dressing” could lead to biased enforcement.
