The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2025 WASSCE results, revealing the worst performance in the last ten years. Only 38 percent of candidates passed with credits in five subjects including English and Mathematics, a significant decline from previous years.

The council disclosed that over 190,000 results are being withheld due to suspected examination malpractice.

Education experts and stakeholders have expressed concern over the sharp drop in performance, linking it to poor learning environments, underprepared students and challenges in adapting to the digital-based testing methods introduced in some centers. WAEC officials are calling for urgent reforms in secondary education and exam preparation across member countries, warning that the decline in academic standards could have long-term consequences for higher education and national development.
