The Rasmus Storyline in "The Day of the Jackal" Didn't Sit Right With Me

‎I recently finished The Day of the Jackal, and overall, I thought it was a very good series. But honestly, the whole Rasmus storyline didn't work for me. The Jackal first meets Rasmus while scouting the Tallinn venue, later reconnects with him and sleeps with him, building enough trust to gain access to the venue. He eventually gets the building plans through Rasmus, which helps him prepare for his assassination attempt on UDC.

‎

‎Then everything goes wrong. A second shooter disrupts the Jackal's attempt, forcing him to escape. Rasmus spots him and follows him, and suddenly becomes a liability because he can identify him. The Jackal kills him and moves on, which shows just how cold and calculated he is. To him, trust, intimacy and people's emotions are simply tools to complete a mission. Once someone becomes a threat, they're expendable.

‎

‎I understand why the writers included the storyline, it shows another side of how far the Jackal is willing to go to deceive people. But personally, I felt the story could have made the same point without spending so much time on the Rasmus scenes. That said, the series was still solid, and Eddie Redmayne's portrayal of the Jackal was impressive.

‎

‎What do you think? Did the Rasmus storyline add something important to the character, or could the story have worked just as well without it?
