Mara found the library on a Tuesday, wedged between a laundromat and a shop that sold only clocks. The doorbell jingled like it remembered her.
Inside, the air smelled of paper and dust, and the shelves leaned in, as if listening. No one was at the desk. Just a note: "Take what you need. Return when you can"
She picked a thin book with no title. The first page said "You were supposed to come yesterday"
Mara smiled. She sat on the floor and read until the sun slid away, and for the first time in months, she didn’t feel late.
