EMBERS OF THE UNSPOKEN
CHAPTER Five -The Last Goodbye
The hospital room was cold.
Not physically—just cold in the way places that are filled with longing and fear often were. Machines beeped softly, nurses whispered in corners, family anxiously waiting for good news and a thin curtain separated life from the people who were almost ready to mourn it.
Seraphine stood unseen in the corner, her presence a gentle pulse of silver light, and beside her, Mira and Aurora-- just hovering, watching the world they no longer belonged to.
Aurora’s body lay on the hospital bed pale and still, beneath the thin white sheets even though she looked peaceful…
She was gone.
Truly gone.
Aurora stared at her own lifeless face, her eyes full of a sadness that was much stronger than her than age could bear.
“I thought I’d feel something,” she whispered. “Fear. Anger. Relief. Something. But… I just feel empty.”
Her voice broke slightly at the edges.
Mira looked at her, understanding her more than she wished she did.
On the other side of the room, three people stood around Aurora’s bed—each unaware of the presence of the souls watching them.
Aurora's mother.
Aurora's father.
And Adrian's aunt.
Aurora’s mother wiped silent tears from her cheeks. Her father rubbed her back gently, trying to be strong but failing as his jaw trembled. Standing beside them was Adrian’s aunt, Eleanor Nicholas—stern, elegant, and worried in a way she was trying unsuccessfully to hide.
“He should be here by now,” Aurora’s mother whispered breaking the silence, looking back at the door.
Eleanor nodded stiffly. “Adrian was informed immediately. He’s… likely dealing with the shock.”
Aurora lowered her gaze.
Saddened by the realization.
Was that what he felt?
She hoped—just once—that he would walk in and look at her the way she had always dreamed he might. Even for a second. Even if it didn’t mean anything to him.
Just to know he could care.
But the door remained closed.
“He’s always at work,” Aurora’s father murmured. “Even now…”
Mira felt something twist inside her. This family cared for Aurora deeply. They knew she deserved better. She had not just been unloved—she had been overlooked in her own marriage.
Seraphine stepped forward softly.
“It is time,” she said.
Aurora looked at her with frightened eyes. “Time for Mira?”
Seraphine nodded.
Mira felt her soul tremble. “What do I do?”
“Just stand close,” Seraphine whispered. “The body will accept your soul willing.”
Aurora swallowed. She looked at her parents again—the people who had loved her even when she’d felt invisible. Then she looked at the door one last time.
Maybe Adrian would walk in.
Maybe she’d see him.
Maybe she’d finally be seen.
Nothing.
The hallway stayed silent.
Aurora blinked away the tears threatening to fall. “I guess… this is it.”
Mira stepped forward, hesitating. “Aurora… thank you. For giving me this chance.”
Aurora gave a small, sad smile. “Just promise me you won't waste this chance.”
“I won’t,” Mira whispered. “I’ll find the truth. For both of us.”
Seraphine raised her hands, and the air shimmered around them. A soft wind—impossible indoors—swept through the room, carrying the faint scent of roses and moonlight.
“Go, Mira,” Seraphine said. “Step into the life that awaits you.”
Mira took a deep breath—and leaned over Aurora’s still body. The moment her essence touched the body, warmth surged through it, filling empty spaces, lighting a dormant spark.
The monitors beeped sharply.
A jump in heart rhythm.
A flicker beneath the eyelids.
Aurora’s parents gasped, stepping forward with hope breaking through their grief.
“It’s her—she’s reacting!” her mother cried softly.
Eleanor clutched her chest.
Meanwhile, behind them, Seraphine motion for Aurora’s waiting soul it was time to leave.
The young woman’s voice trembled.
“Will I disappear?”
“No,” Seraphine said, her tone gentle. “let go back to the threshold first.”
Aurora closed her eyes.
“Then I’m ready.”
In a breath, the light folded around them, and they faded like a soft whisper carried by the wind.
Mira opened her eyes inside Aurora’s body.
Alive again.
Breathing again.
With two lives intertwined and two revenge paths laid before her.
Then she saw the hopeful eyes of Aurora's family staring back at her.
But Mira felt the weight of the stare… and the weight of everything that awaited her.
