A LANTERN FOR THE LONELY

A Microfiction

The tide didn't pull the water; it pulled the silver from her skin.

Every night, the Sun sat on the cliffs, watching the lunar disk grow fat and heavy. To the village, it was a lantern for travelers. To her, it was a debt collector.

As the moon reached its zenith, the glow beneath her fingernails began to bleed upward in shimmering ribbons. She felt the hollow ache of becoming dim, her pulse slowing as the light returned to its source. By dawn, she would be nothing but gray clay and shadow, waiting for the cycle to restart.

"Why do you give it back?" the wind hissed.

"Because," the Sun whispered, her voice like cracking parchment, "he's lonely up there, and I know what it’s like to be empty."
