The Mercy Tax
In the New Republic, you could break any law if you paid the "Social Equilibrium Fee." Justice was a line item in a ledger. A poor man stole bread and spent a decade in a cell; a rich man stole a mountain and bought the judge a new wing for the courthouse. The law was a straight line, but the toll booths were only on one side.
