EMBERS OF THE UNSPOKEN
The Weight of What Cannot Be Buried (part2)
Vanessa walked out of the living room with steady steps, her shoulders straight, her chin lifted—every movement controlled, composed, deliberate.
But once she entered Sterling’s bedroom and closed the door behind her, the mask cracked.
Her hands began trembling first.
Then her breath.
Then everything.
She leaned against the door, sliding down until her knees hit the floor, her chest caving in as the weight of what they’d done that she carried on her shoulder slammed into her all at once.
“Mira…” she whispered, voice breaking as tears rushed to her eyes.
“Oh God… Mira.”
Her fingers dug into her scalp, pulling at her hair as she sobbed—silently at first, then uncontrollably.
She had killed her best friend.
The girl she grew up with.
The one who held her hand through heartbreaks.
The one who shared secrets, dreams, childhood promises.
Vanessa pressed her forehead against the cold wooden floor, shaking violently.
“I didn’t want this… I didn’t want this,” she cried in a whisper that sounded like a confession to no one in particula
"Am so sorry… I didn't mean for this…”
Her breath hitched painfully.
Images of Mira flashed in her mind—
Mira cheering for her through her ups and downs…
Mira trusting her more than anyone else.
And Vanessa had destroyed that trust with her own hands.
Her sobs grew harsher, ripping out of her like they were tearing pieces of her soul with them.
For a long moment, the room was filled with nothing but her broken, muffled crying.
But then—
A sound downstairs reminded her Sterling was still awake… still cracking… still needing someone strong enough to keep their story from falling apart.
Vanessa forced herself to stop.
She wiped her tears with shaking hands.
Tried to steady her breathing.
Tried to rebuild the icy wall that kept her sane.
Slowly, she pushed herself off the floor and stumbled into the bathroom.
She turned on the tap and splashed cold water on her face, scrubbing off dirt, sweat, and the last traces of Mira’s blood from her skin.
When she finally lifted her head, she faced the mirror.
Her reflection looked nothing like the calm woman she pretended to be.
Her eyes were swollen.
Her lips trembling.
Her face pale with horror.
Vanessa gripped the sides of the sink until her knuckles turned white.
And then, staring straight into her own shaking reflection, she whispered:
“You did what you had to do.”
Her voice cracked—but she kept going.
“There was no other way. We had to protect ourselves.”
She swallowed hard.
“She left us no choice. We didn’t plan it—things got out of control. It's not your fault.”
Her hand slid to her chest, trying to calm her racing heart.
“Stop crying,” she whispered fiercely.
“Stop breaking. Sterling can’t handle this. He needs someone who can think… someone who won’t fall apart.”
Her breathing slowed, shifting from panic to cold determination.
“You can do this, Vanessa. You have to.”
She straightened, wiped the remaining tears from her cheeks, and forced a steady expression back onto her face.
A mask.
A shield.
A lie.
She stared at her reflection one last time.
“All of this…” she murmured, “was necessary.”
Then she turned off the bathroom light, stepped out of Sterling’s room, and closed the door gently behind her—
—and the woman who walked out looked nothing like the one who had collapsed moments before.
