Your mates are getting A1… you’re still failing.”

“Your mates don’t have two heads o!”

“You’re not good enough.”

If you grew up in an African home (or any home that believes “tough love” builds character), these sentences are permanently tattooed on your soul.

They were repeated so often that you started believing them.

You started saying them to yourself in the mirror.

And the worst part? Many of us have sworn, “I’ll never say this to my own children”… only to hear those exact words fly out of our mouths the day our child brings home a bad result.

Those words are not motivation.

They are curses disguised as correction.

I know because I carried them for years.

I carried “You’ll never amount to anything.”

I carried “See your mate!”

I carried the heavy silence that followed every mistake silence that spoke louder than any shout.

Those words became my inner soundtrack:

Not smart enough.

Not bold enough.

Not enough.

Until one day I met a girl let’s call her Chioma.

Chioma was 19, painfully shy, barely spoke in groups.

When we started talking, tears rolled down her cheeks as she listed every label her family had given her:

“Slow.” “Dull.” “You’ll disgrace us.”

She believed she was broken.

I asked her one question that changed everything:

“What if every negative word spoken over you was a lie… and God has been speaking the truth the whole time?”

Then we did something simple but powerful.

Every day for 60 days, she replaced one old label with one new truth:

Old voice: “Your mates are better than you.” New voice: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)

Old voice: “You’re not good enough. New voice: “I am God’s masterpiece, created for good works.” (Ephesians 2:10)

Old voice: “You’ll never amount to anything.”

New voice: “The Lord has plans to prosper me and give me hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Within weeks, something shifted.

She started speaking up in class.

She made her first real friends.

She looked people in the eye and smiled a smile that said, “I know who I am now.”

Words are seeds.

The ones planted in childhood grow into forests forests of confidence or forests of fear.

So I made a decision:

I will not pass the curse to the next generation.

I am breaking the cycle starting with me.

Every morning I stand in front of the mirror and declare who God says I am.

Some days it feels silly.

Some days tears fall because the old voices still scream.

But I keep speaking until the new voice becomes louder.

And to you reading this right now yes, YOU:

You are not your worst grade.

You are not your parents’ disappointment.

You are not the mistake you made last year.

You are loved with an everlasting love.

You are chosen.

You are cherished.

You are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a person God calls His own. (1 Peter 2:9)

Declare it.

Write it.

Say it out loud until you believe it.

A Nigerian Catholic nun is making waves globally after clinching the prestigious 2024 Opus Prize worth $1 million. The award-winning nun, a member of the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus (HHCJ), is using her global spotlight to advocate for stronger partnerships between major institutions, like the World Bank and faith-based organizations (FBOs).

According to her, FBOs are deeply rooted in communities and have the trust of the people, making them highly effective in driving sustainable development, education and social impact. She urged global donors and development partners to recognize this unique advantage and work directly with faith-based groups to achieve lasting change.

Her bold call has not only sparked conversations about the role of religion in development but has also positioned Nigeria on the world stage for positive influence.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a strong call to action, urging its members across the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to take voter registration seriously.

In a statement, CAN stressed that active participation in civic duties is not just a right but a responsibility, especially for those seeking inclusive governance. The body has tasked pastors, priests and other religious leaders to mobilize their congregations toward registering and preparing to vote in future elections.

According to CAN, the church must go beyond prayers and moral teachings by ensuring its members have a voice at the ballot box. The association believes that with faith-driven mobilization, the Christian community can contribute significantly to shaping policies that promote justice, equity and unity in Nigeria.

Fear and grief have once again gripped rural Nigeria after armed attackers stormed several Christian farming villages, leaving a trail of death and destruction.

At least 15 villagers were brutally killed in the late-night assault, with homes razed, farmlands destroyed and livestock looted. Survivors described the attackers as heavily armed, moving from house to house and spreading terror without mercy.

Shaken residents are calling for urgent government intervention, warning that if attacks like this continue unchecked, entire farming communities may be wiped out threatening not only lives but also food security in the region.

Religious leaders and human rights groups have condemned the killings, urging authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore peace to the vulnerable villages.

For now, the farming communities are left mourning their dead, counting their losses and wondering: who will protect them next time the attackers return?

Speaking at a one-day colloquium in Makurdi, the group questioned why indigenous beliefs are consistently sidelined despite being deeply rooted in the country’s culture and history.

The FFA argued that true religious plurality can only exist when every faith is treated without bias, stressing that sidelining traditional religions undermines Nigeria’s diversity and marginalizes millions of adherents.

Philip Mulryne once lived a life many could only dream of. The talented Northern Irish midfielder rose to stardom playing for Manchester United, Norwich City, Cardiff City and even representing Northern Ireland internationally. With fame, wealth and a career in top-flight football, he seemed to have it all.

Behind the glamour, Mulryne felt a deep emptiness. Despite his success on the pitch, he longed for something more meaningful, something the world of football couldn’t offer.

Sam was born and raised in a deeply religious home. His parents taught him the ways of God and hoped he would grow to be a light to others. As he grew older, Sam drifted away. He rejected the faith of his childhood and went down paths that broke his parents’ hearts.

Year after year, he wandered further, losing himself to worldly pleasures. Then one night changed everything. Sam attended a friend’s party where drinking and recklessness ruled the atmosphere. In a drunken state, he got into a heated argument with another guest. In anger, Sam pushed the man, who tragically fell and died instantly.

In that moment, Sam’s life crumbled. He was arrested, charged and later sent to prison for murder. The boy who had once been raised with prayer and Scripture now sat behind cold prison bars.

Two years passed. His family kept praying and seeking a way out, but nothing seemed to change. Then, one day, hope walked into the prison in the form of a visiting pastor. The pastor preached the message of salvation, mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. For the first time in years, Sam’s hardened heart began to melt. That day, he surrendered his life to Christ.

From then on, Sam became a new man. He joined prison fellowship, studied the Bible with passion and worshiped with other inmates. His transformation was undeniable, he was no longer the same person who had walked into prison.

By the end of that year, something miraculous happened, Sam was granted freedom. What the law and man could not fix, God’s mercy turned around.

Today, Sam’s life is a testimony that no one is too far gone for God’s grace. From prisoner to preacher of hope, he now tells others that if Christ could change him, He can change anyone.
