African Traditional Religions: Rites of Passage and Identity

In many African societies, circumcision predates the arrival of Abrahamic religions and remains deeply embedded in traditional belief systems.

• More than physical: It represents transition from boyhood to manhood, social responsibility and spiritual rebirth.

• Ceremonial practice: Often accompanied by rituals, seclusion and teachings on manhood, morality and societal expectations.

• Spiritual meaning: It’s not just about cutting the flesh — it’s a form of initiation into adulthood, often believed to connect the individual with ancestral spirits.

Some communities also practice female circumcision (FGM), though this is widely condemned on human rights and health grounds and is not endorsed by any major world religion.
