Circumcision — a simple surgical act, yet one steeped in centuries of religious meaning, cultural identity, and moral debate. Across Judaism, Islam, Christianity, and African traditional beliefs, circumcision has stood as a mark of faith, obedience, and belonging.

But how did this practice become such a powerful spiritual symbol? And why do views on it still stir strong emotions today?

Judaism: The Covenant of the Flesh

In Judaism, circumcision (brit milah) is far more than a medical procedure, it is a divine covenant between God and His people.

• Origin: The command is traced back to Genesis 17, where God tells Abraham:

“Every male among you shall be circumcised… it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.”

• Timing: Jewish boys are circumcised on the eighth day after birth, regardless of the day of the week even on the Sabbath.

• Spiritual significance: It is seen as an act of obedience, purity and identity: an irreversible sign that binds each Jewish male to God and to generations past and future.

For many Jewish families, not circumcising a son is unthinkable and brit milah ceremonies are among the most sacred and emotional events in Jewish life.
