When Adaora Nwankwo found out she was pregnant with her second child, her joy knew no bounds. That joy quickly turned to fear when, during a routine check-up, doctors discovered something alarming. Further tests revealed the unthinkable, Adaora had stage four cancer.

At just 29 weeks pregnant, she was told that carrying her baby to full term could endanger both their lives. With courage in her heart, she agreed to deliver early at 34 weeks so she could begin treatment immediately. Her premature baby girl was placed in an incubator while Adaora was wheeled into a new battle, one for her life.

Chemotherapy sessions began, but after months of enduring the grueling treatment, doctors delivered another devastating blow; the cancer was not responding and she had just three months to live.

Many would have surrendered to despair, but Adaora chose a different path. She held on to her faith, surrounded herself with prayer and refused to believe her story was over. “I told God, You gave me this child and You are not done with me yet,” she would later recall.

Weeks turned into months and against all odds, her strength returned. Follow-up scans revealed what the doctors could hardly believe, the cancer was gone. Adaora had defied every medical expectation.

Now, five years later, she remains cancer-free, watching her once-fragile baby thrive and grow. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, faith and the miracles that can happen when hope is stronger than fear.
