Waidi Shaibu, chief of army staff (COAS), has cautioned newly enlisted soldiers against the misuse of social media.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, Shaibu spoke on Wednesday at the maiden passing-out parade of 2,989 pioneer recruits at the Depot Nigerian Army, Amasiri, in Edda LGA of Ebonyi state.

The army chief warned that indiscriminate use of social media could jeopardise military operations, undermine national security and lead to dismissal from service.

Shaibu told the recruits that the growing trend of military personnel posting operational information, images of military activities and sensitive locations on social media poses serious risks to operational security and the integrity of the Nigerian Army.

According to him, the unauthorised dissemination of operational information and photographs of military installations and activities, as well as the circulation of unverified and misleading content, constitute grave violations of existing military regulations.

Shaibu said “violations of the Nigerian Army social media policy can and will attract disciplinary action, including dismissal from service where necessary.”

He noted that such misconduct carries severe consequences for individual soldiers, the military institution and the nation.

He added that while offending personnel risk losing their careers, honour and livelihoods, the Nigerian Army would suffer damage to its discipline, operational security, morale and institutional credibility.

Shaibu said the nation would also bear the cost through the waste of substantial public resources invested in recruiting and training affected personnel.

The army chief urged the new soldiers to use social media responsibly, remain disciplined, respect human rights and adhere to the army’s rules of engagement.

He also assured them of the federal government’s commitment to improving their welfare, training and operational capabilities through continued investment in the armed forces.

“The nation has invested substantial resources in your training because it believes in your ability to make a difference,” he said.

“You now carry the proud responsibility of defending our nation and preserving the rich traditions of the Nigerian Army.”

Shaibu said the federal government is investing in local defence production and emerging technologies to strengthen the military.

He commended the parents and guardians of the graduating recruits for their support and sacrifices throughout the training period.

“You entrusted your children and wards to the Nigerian Army. You endured months of separation, anxiety and uncertainty, and today you witness with pride their transformation into disciplined soldiers,” he said.

“You have given your best to Nigeria, and the nation salutes your sacrifice. Continue to stand by them, encourage them and pray for them because military service is demanding.”

Shaibu urged leaders and residents of the south-east to encourage greater participation of youths from the region in military service.

He noted that recruitment quotas allocated to the south-east have consistently remained underutilised, describing the trend as a concern requiring collective action.

The army chief appreciated all stakeholders whose contributions made the establishment of the Depot Nigerian Army in Amasiri possible.
