Security operatives from more than 10 agencies joined forces in a month-long intelligence-led operation that secured the release of 44 pupils and teachers abducted by terrorists from Oriire LGA of Oyo state.
The operation was led by CR Nnebeife, general officer commanding 2 Division of the Nigerian Army.
It involved the army, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), defence headquarters, special forces from the Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), as well as local vigilantes, hunters and the Amotekun corps.
According to the army, the operation led to multiple arrests and the dismantling of the kidnappers’ network, including its informants, logistics links and hideouts in the Old Oyo National Park, before the victims were released.
The freed pupils and teachers are receiving medical attention and will be reunited with their families after being handed over to the Oyo state government.
