Nigeria, China Mark 55 Years of Diplomatic Ties, Reaffirm Strategic Partnership

Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have commemorated the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across key sectors.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, the Federal Government described the Nigeria–China relationship as one built on mutual respect, solidarity, and a shared vision for development since diplomatic ties were formally established in 1971.

Over the past five decades, the relationship has evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership, featuring sustained political dialogue, expanding economic cooperation, and growing cultural exchanges. Nigeria acknowledged China’s significant contributions to its socio-economic development, particularly in infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, agriculture, and human capacity development.
Major projects such as the Lagos Ibadan Railway, Abuja Kaduna Railway, and several road networks were highlighted as landmark achievements of the partnership, with tangible impacts on national development and improved livelihoods for Nigerians.

The Ministry noted that bilateral relations are further strengthened by increasing trade volumes, strong people-to-people connections, and close collaboration on regional and global issues, especially within the frameworks of the Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the United Nations.

To mark the anniversary, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, exchanged congratulatory messages with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.

In his message, Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that China and Nigeria have consistently supported each other over the past 55 years, regardless of global changes. He noted that the friendship between both countries has grown deeper, particularly since the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024, leading to increased political trust, productive cooperation across multiple sectors, and closer coordination on international and regional affairs.

Ambassador Tuggar, in his response, described China as one of Nigeria’s most important strategic partners. He emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to advancing bilateral exchanges while exploring new areas of cooperation that align with the foreign policy objectives and development priorities of both countries.

The Federal Government reiterated its determination to deepen collaboration in emerging areas such as the digital economy, green energy, manufacturing, and security, expressing confidence that Nigeria–China relations will continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.

According to the Ministry, the enduring partnership is expected to contribute significantly to peace, stability, and shared prosperity in Africa and the global community.
