EFCC: Immigration CG not under investigation over visa fraud allegations

By Bolanle Olabimtan

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says Kemi Nandap, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), is not under investigation over alleged visa fraud involving some immigration officers.

In a statement issued on Monday by Dele Oyewale, EFCC spokesperson, the commission said media reports suggesting that Nandap was being investigated were false.

The anti-graft agency said while it is prosecuting some immigration officers over alleged visa fraud, the NIS comptroller-general has no connection to the cases.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is aware of reports in the media about alleged visa racketeering involving some officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, especially subtle insinuations about assumed investigation of the Comptroller General of the Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap,” the statement reads.

“The Commission wishes to state unequivocally that it has no case with the Immigration CG.”

Oyewale added that investigations are ongoing and more officers of the service could be arraigned for alleged fraudulent practices.

“There are subsisting cases of alleged visa fraud against some immigration officers at the Federal High Court. Further investigations are ongoing with the possibility that more NIS officers could be arraigned for alleged fraudulent practices in the near future,” he said.

“However, the Immigration CG is not remotely connected to these investigations.”

The commission urged media organisations to seek clarification before publishing reports on its activities.
