Nigeria's ambitious refining project has reached another significant milestone as the Dangote Petroleum Refinery announced that it has successfully increased its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), surpassing its original nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd.

According to the refinery, the achievement was recorded during a performance test conducted by process licensors, highlighting the facility's growing operational efficiency and engineering capability.

The development further strengthens the refinery's position as the world's largest single-train petroleum refinery and marks a major step in Nigeria's efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency.

Officials stated that the increase is part of a broader expansion strategy aimed at raising refining capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day within the next 30 months, a move that could position the facility among the largest refining operations globally.

The refinery noted that increased production is expected to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, improve fuel availability across Nigeria, and enhance the country's role as a major energy exporter within Africa and beyond.

Since commencing fuel production in 2024, the facility has steadily expanded its output of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and other refined petroleum products. It has also emerged as a significant supplier to regional and international markets.

Industry analysts believe the expansion could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria's economy by boosting industrial activity, creating jobs, supporting foreign exchange stability, and strengthening local manufacturing through the supply of critical petrochemical products.

The announcement comes as the refinery continues to attract growing interest from global crude suppliers and commodity traders, reinforcing its status as one of the most consequential industrial projects on the African continent.

With plans to further expand capacity and increase exports, the Dangote Refinery appears set to play an even larger role in shaping the future of Africa's energy landscape.
