FG Builds 8.54MW Solar Hybrid Power Plant In FUTO

The Federal Government of Nigeria has completed an 8.54MWp Solar Hybrid Power Plant at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

This landmark project is more than just an energy upgrade—it signals a new era for campus life, research, and sustainability in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

For decades, Nigerian universities have struggled with erratic power supply. Students endure sleepless nights due to blackouts, while research and laboratory work often grind to a halt when electricity fails.

The new solar hybrid plant promises to change that by delivering:

Reliable electricity for hostels, classrooms, ICT centres, and laboratories.

Reduced fuel dependency, cutting both costs and noise from diesel generators.

Cleaner energy, lowering FUTO’s carbon footprint and supporting Nigeria’s climate goals.

The FUTO plant is not an isolated effort. It aligns with the Federal Government’s Energising Education Programme (EEP), which has already delivered similar projects in other universities:

FUNAI in Ebonyi State (2.8MW)

FUPRE in Delta State (1.35MW)

These initiatives aim to transform Nigerian universities into models of sustainability, while providing stable energy for learning and innovation.

If managed well, the 8.54MWp Solar Hybrid Power Plant at FUTO could be a game-changer for Students, Researchers and the nation as a whole.
