Nigeria’s push to transform student ideas into real-world solutions took a bold step forward as the Federal Government awarded N2.2 billion in grants to 45 outstanding student innovators at the 2026 Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG) Finalist Bootcamp, Closing Ceremony, and Awards Presentation in Lagos.

 “Our universities must become engines of innovation, not just centres of learning.”

 With this powerful call to action, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Moruf Tunji Alausa, set the tone for what became a defining moment for young Nigerian entrepreneurs and the future of education in the country.

His message reflected a clear vision. Nigeria’s future will not only be shaped in lecture halls but in the ideas students are empowered to build, test, and scale into impactful ventures. At the centre of this vision is the S-VCG initiative, a strategic intervention designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and enterprise by equipping students with funding, mentorship, and the practical tools needed to succeed.

 A New Generation of Problem Solvers Held at the UNDP Office in Ikoyi, Lagos, the event brought together some of the brightest student entrepreneurs from across the country. From over 30,000 applications submitted by students in 404 tertiary institutions, 65 finalists were selected for an intensive bootcamp experience where their ideas were rigorously refined. At the end of the process, 45 ventures emerged as winners, each presenting innovative solutions to real societal challenges.

Their ideas spanned technology, social impact, and enterprise development, reflecting not just creativity but a growing determination among young Nigerians to shape national progress. For Dr. Alausa, this milestone signals what is possible when students are given the right support. Through the S-VCG programme, winners can access up to ₦50 million in equity free funding, alongside incubation support, mentorship, and digital tools that enable them to transform concepts into viable businesses.

 Beyond Theory: Building for Impact Also speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, emphasized the importance of technology in driving modern innovation. He commended the students for embedding digital solutions into their ventures and encouraged them to think beyond local relevance towards global scalability.

The Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, highlighted the deeper value of the initiative. She noted that programmes like S-VCG are not just about funding ideas but about nurturing a mindset of resilience, creativity, and problem solving among students.

Inside the Bootcamp Experience

 At the heart of the programme was an intensive and practical bootcamp designed to mirror the realities of entrepreneurship. Participants engaged in hands-on training, mentorship sessions, and pitch reviews that challenged them to strengthen their business models and sharpen their ideas.

Providing an overview of the initiative, Mr. Adebayo Onigbanjo, National Project Coordinator of the Special Program Operations and Implementation Unit, explained that the programme is focused on delivering real outcomes. He noted that the goal is to build sustainable ventures that can scale and create measurable impact.

Participants also shared reflections on their experience. Professor Okujagu and Lantana Elhassan described the bootcamp as transformative, pointing to the collaborative environment, practical learning, and exposure that significantly strengthened their entrepreneurial capacity.

Innovation on Display One of the most engaging highlights of the event was the Innovation Spotlight, where finalists presented their ventures before an audience of policymakers, industry leaders, and development partners.

As the event came to a close, one message stood out. Nigeria’s future is already taking shape in the ideas, ambition, and creativity of its young people.
