The Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK) has successfully hosted its 3rd Inaugural Lecture, a significant event that underscores the institution's growing reputation for research excellence. The lecture, which drew a capacity crowd of academics, students, and government officials, focused on the intersection of microbial science and national food security.

The lecture, titled “Microorganisms at the Crossroads: Harnessing Microbial Science for Safe, Nutritious, and Sustainable Food Systems in Nigeria,” was delivered by Professor Abbas Yusuf Bazata, a distinguished scholar from the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science.

Professor Bazata’s presentation highlighted the dual nature of microorganisms—both as threats to food safety and as essential tools for enhancing nutritional value.

He argued that for Nigeria to achieve true food sovereignty, the country must invest in indigenous microbial research to reduce post-harvest losses and improve the shelf-life of local produce.

The Professor called for a "Biotechnological Revolution" in the Nigerian agricultural sector, moving away from traditional preservation methods toward more scientific, sustainable microbial interventions.

The event was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, who described the inaugural lecture series as the "soul of academic tradition."

"This 3rd Inaugural Lecture is a testament to our commitment to putting FUBK on the global map of research-intensive universities. We are not just teaching; we are providing solutions to the challenges facing our immediate community and the nation at large," Prof. Umar stated.

This lecture comes at a time of rapid expansion for the university. Just weeks ago, the University Governing Council approved the promotion of 34 staff members, including elevating two academic staff to the rank of Professor and two to the rank of Reader.

The successful hosting of this lecture is seen as a major win for the Faculty of Science and a signal that FUBK is aggressively pursuing its mandate to become a hub for scientific innovation in North-Western Nigeria.
