Three students of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) have been abducted by unidentified gunmen from their off-campus hostel.
The Nasarawa state police command confirmed the abduction of the students in a statement via X on Wednesday.
The student were said to have been taken from their residence located along Awe road, near the university’s temporary campus in Akunza, Lafia.
Ramhan Nansel, the police spokesperson in the state, said the command received a distress call from the chief security officer (CSO) of the varsity on Tuesday night.
Nansel noted that the gunmen broke down the door of the students’ home to force their way inside.
The police stated that immediately after the report, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, the state commissioner, ordered the deployment of tactical teams, patrol operatives to the scene.
The force added that after coordinated search-and-rescue operation within the surrounding forest, one of the abducted students was rescued, while two others remain in captivity.
“Efforts have since been intensified to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining two victims still in captivity and the arrest of the perpetrators,” the statement reads.
Nansel added that Mohammed directed all operational and intelligence assets of the command to sustain the ongoing operation until the remaining victims are rescued unharmed.
The commissioner also assured the public that efforts will be made to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested.
He urged the residents to remain calm, vigilant, and continue to support the police by providing timely and credible information.
