In a strategic move to blend academic continuity with student welfare, the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has officially transitioned a significant portion of its Rain Semester lectures to a virtual format. The initiative, which utilizes the university’s upgraded Learning Management System (LMS), is currently in full swing and is scheduled to remain the primary mode of instruction through the end of the month.

The University management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), directed that virtual classes commence on Monday, March 9, 2026. This digital phase is set to conclude on Thursday, March 27, 2026, strategically covering the period leading up to and including the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

According to the Director of Computer Services and Information Technology (COMSIT), Prof. Rasheed Gbenga Jimoh, this transition is more than a temporary fix. It represents a "strategic leap" into a 21st-century academic environment. The new LMS, powered by technical partner SchoolTry AB Limited, offers students:

·        Interactive e-Assignments: Streamlined submission and grading.

·        Asynchronous Forums: Space for peer-to-peer and lecturer-student discussions.

·        Virtual Classrooms: Live sessions that can be accessed from any location.

The decision to go virtual for this three-week block was motivated by several factors:

Ease of Transportation: Reducing the immediate pressure on campus transport systems during a period of high economic sensitivity.

Holiday Flexibility: Allowing students to engage in academic activities from their homes, particularly those traveling for the Ramadan and Eid holidays.

ICT Integration: Furthering UNILORIN’s goal of achieving 100% automation in academic and administrative processes.

While the move has been praised by parents and many students for its convenience and cost-saving on physical commuting, it has also sparked discussions among the "Unilorites" regarding data costs and internet stability in remote areas.

The University has urged all students to remain active on the portal, noting that Continuous Assessment (CA) tests and the uploading of results will closely follow this virtual window. As per the official academic calendar, the CBT Continuous Assessment for the Rain Semester is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 6, 2026.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) has emphasized that despite the virtual delivery, the quality of instruction remains "Better by Far." Faculty members have been instructed to ensure that all courseware is uploaded and that students are not left behind during this digital transition.
