The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ilorin has officially opened a call for applications from interested and qualified students to serve as riders in the newly launched Electric Tricycle initiative. This specific recruitment drive, which was formally announced on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, is part of the university’s broader "Work and Study" programme designed to provide students with a legitimate means to earn an income while pursuing their degrees.

The deployment of these electric tricycles follows the official unveiling of 20 solar-powered units by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), earlier this year on January 2, 2026. According to the Students' Union President, Adelu Idris Ayomo, this week's call for student riders is a strategic step to operationalize the fleet and tackle the persistent transportation challenges at the new university motor park. By engaging students as riders, the union aims to ensure an eco-friendly mobility system that remains under institutional control while offering flexible shifts that do not clash with academic lecture timetables.

The application window is currently active, and interested students are expected to apply through the official digital portal provided by the SUG. Beyond the financial benefits, the university management noted that the programme is intended to foster a culture of responsibility and entrepreneurship within the student community. To ensure the safety of the "Unilorite" community, all student applicants will undergo a vetting process and a proficiency test conducted by the university's Works and Security units before being cleared to operate the tricycles. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the 2026 strategic transport reform aimed at eliminating extortion and improving student welfare on campus.
