Mbappé Expected to Miss Man City Clash at the Bernabéu

Kylian Mbappé Ruled Out of First Leg Against Manchester City

Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa has confirmed that Kylian Mbappé is a major doubt for the upcoming Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabéu. Speaking ahead of Monday's La Liga fixture against Getafe CF, the 43-year-old coach—who replaced Xabi Alonso in January 2026—admitted that the French superstar is still struggling with a persistent left knee injury. The issue, which has plagued Mbappé since before Christmas, flared up again during training on February 24, forcing him to miss the recent play-off victory over SL Benfica.

Arbeloa struck a cautious tone when pressed on a return date, emphasizing that the club will not risk a long-term setback for their leading scorer, who has already netted 38 goals this season. "We are very clear about what is happening to him and what we want now, which is for him to recover 100%," the manager told reporters. While Real Madrid has managed the 27-year-old’s workload by resting him in December and during the Spanish Super Cup, the current medical outlook suggests a three-week layoff. This timeline would see Mbappé miss the March 11 showdown in Madrid, with the club now targeting a return for the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on March 17.

The potential absence of Mbappé is a seismic blow for Los Blancos as they face Pep Guardiola’s side for the fifth consecutive year. In his place, Arbeloa is expected to lean heavily on Vinícius Júnior, who has been in sensational form, and the creative spark of Jude Bellingham. However, for a Manchester City defense led by Ruben Dias, the news provides a significant mental boost. With the first leg just ten days away, the medical staff at Valdebebas is working around the clock, but as Arbeloa noted, they will take it "day by day" to ensure their star is not compromised ahead of a potential World Cup summer.
