Ferencváros suffered a major setback in their Champions League play-off first leg after losing 3–1 at home to Qarabağ FK in Budapest. The Hungarian side made a bright start and took the lead in the 29th minute when Barnabás Varga finished off a fine move, but the visitors responded with composure and determination.

Just after the break, Marko Janković struck a powerful equaliser that shifted momentum towards Qarabağ. The Azerbaijani champions then grew stronger as the game progressed, and Kevin Medina put them ahead with a header from a corner midway through the second half. Ferencváros struggled to regain control, and their defensive lapses proved costly once again when substitute Musa Gurbanli calmly slotted home in the 85th minute to seal a commanding advantage.

Statistically, both sides were close in attempts, but Qarabağ’s efficiency in front of goal and their better passing accuracy gave them the edge. Ferencváros also conceded too many fouls, breaking their rhythm and handing Qarabağ more opportunities to dictate play.

The result leaves Qarabağ in a strong position ahead of the return leg in Baku on 27 August, while Ferencváros will need something special to overturn the deficit if they are to keep their Champions League dream alive.
