Real Madrid opened their Champions League campaign with a 2–1 victory over Marseille at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night.
Kylian Mbappé was the difference, converting two penalties to secure all three points for Xabi Alonso’s side. Despite moments of frustration in Madrid’s overall play, their new talisman proved decisive.
Marseille, who battled bravely throughout, managed to pull one back, but they lacked the cutting edge to seriously threaten Madrid’s lead.
With over 74,000 fans in attendance, the atmosphere lifted the hosts, and although Alonso may seek more control from his midfield going forward, the night belonged to Mbappé, who once again showed his ability to step up on Europe’s biggest stage.
Final Score: Real Madrid 2–1 Marseille
